LGBTQ Youth Jersey

LGBTQ stands for:

  • Lesbian – a woman who is emotionally, romantically, and/or physically attracted to other women
  • Gay – person who is emotionally, romantically and/or physically attracted to people of the same gender identity as their own
  • Bisexual – a person who is emotionally, romantically and/or physically attracted to people of both male and female identifying people
  • Transgender – a term describing a person whose gender identity that does not match their assigned gender at birth
  • Questioning – is used to describe a person who is questioning or in the process of understanding their sense of gender identity and/or sexual orientation

What are the issues?

Young LGBTQ people are more likely to experience the following:

  • Bullying and harassment
  • Social exclusion or feelings of isolation
  • Exposure to negative transphobic, biphobic and homophobic attitudes or abuse
  • Lack of support and understanding or rejection and alienation from friends or family
  • Depression or anxiety with instances of self-harm or attempted suicide
  • Difficulties with self-acceptance, self-confidence and self-esteem

What support does our funding provide?

  • Weekly youth club sessions to meet with LGBTQ peers
  • Free and confidential counselling services from qualified counsellors trained on LGBTQ awareness
  • Access to new opportunities and experiences to help with personal development and self-esteem
  • Support for families supporting LGBTQ young people
